Wall Units FAQ

Coastal Design Furniture specialises in custom made wall units from our Erina showroom on the NSW Central Coast. Units are hand crafted in Australia with Australian and imported timbers. You choose width, height, doors, drawers, a TV bay if you need one, and a natural timber, white wash or painted finish.

This FAQ answers the questions we hear most in the showroom and on free measure-and-quote visits. It draws on the same details used on our Wall Units, Display Units, TV Units and Office Furniture pages, and in our earlier Erina guides on measuring and executive home offices.

What is a wall unit, and how is it different from a display unit or a TV unit?

A wall unit is a timber storage run built for a specific wall — living room, dining room or home office. It can mix open shelves, glass doors, drawers and a place for a television. A display unit is usually more about showing books, glassware or objects. A TV unit is built around the screen and the equipment under it. On the Central Coast we often combine those jobs in one custom piece so the wall reads as one run, not three separate cabinets.

Do you sell ready-made wall unit sets?

No. We do not sell boxed matching sets. Floor pieces in the Erina showroom are starting points. If you like the Coastal White Wall Unit, the Tassie Oak Wall Unit, the White Four Panel Wall Unit or a black wall display, we can build that idea wider, taller, slimmer, with a different door and drawer layout, or with a TV bay added.

What can you customise on a wall unit?

Almost the layout. Common changes include:

  • Width, height and depth to suit the wall, skirting and ceiling
  • More or fewer shelves, drawers or doors
  • A bay for a wall-hung or stand-mounted TV
  • Enclosed cupboards for the printer, files or media boxes
  • Glass shelves, glass doors and internal lighting
  • Corner or alcove builds, including raked ceilings
  • A desk return or worktop if the same wall is also the home office

If you have seen a photo you like — on our site or elsewhere — bring it in. We design from the wall and from how you use the room, not from a catalogue SKU.

Which timbers and finishes can I choose?

Timber options used across our custom range include Jarrah, Blackwood, Tassie Oak, Rosewood, Beechwood, Blackbutt, Pine, American Oak and Spot Gum. Other local and imported species such as Victorian Ash and Oregon are also used depending on the piece.

Finishes are a natural timber finish, white wash, stain, or paint in a colour that already sits in the house. The Coastal White Wall Unit, for example, can stay painted or be built in a natural hardwood instead.

Can a wall unit include a television?

Yes. That is a large part of the work we do. We can leave an open bay for a wall-hung screen and build storage around it, or design a stand-style unit with cupboards under the TV for digital equipment. Clients often ask for extra depth or ventilated enclosed storage for a decoder, soundbar or games console, plus glass shelving and lighting beside the screen.

Can you build a wall unit for a home office?

Yes. Our office range includes desk wall units and hutches as well as desks and filing. A desk wall unit can run the full wall with a worktop, open shelves for a tidy video-call background, and closed storage for files and the printer. Extra drawers, a hutch, or a slimmer run around an existing robe are all options. We treat the office wall the same way as a living-room wall: measure first, then build the storage that belongs there.

How do I know what size to order?

Measure the wall twice, in millimetres: width, height to the ceiling, and how deep the piece can sit without blocking a walkway or door swing. Also measure doorway, hallway and stair widths on the delivery path — solid timber units do not flex around a tight corner. Note windows, power points, air-conditioning units and skirting. Photos of the full wall, including corners, help more than a floor plan on its own.

You do not have to get every figure perfect before you visit. Rough notes are enough. A showroom conversation or a free on-site measure confirms the numbers before anything is made.

Do you offer a free measure and quote?

Yes. A consultant can come to the home, measure the wall, ceiling and delivery path, mark skirting, windows, power and door swings, and talk through whether the room is used for dining, a TV wall or a home office. The visit is so production starts from the room, not from a photo of someone else’s living room. Book through the Measure and Quote page, call (02) 4365 6298, or come into 166 Central Coast Highway, Erina.

What if the wall is an awkward alcove, a corner, or has a raked ceiling?

That is a common reason people come to us instead of buying a standard cabinet. Width, height, shelf layout and which side a return sits on can all change to suit the wall. Off-the-shelf units are often too shallow or too deep for Central Coast alcoves. A floor-to-ceiling custom run can turn that dead space into the feature of the room.

How long does a custom wall unit take, and do you install it?

Lead time depends on timber, finish and how full the workshop is. We confirm timing with the quote. Larger wall units are planned around the delivery path as well as the finished wall. Installation can be arranged so the piece is set level, fixed where it needs to be, and checked against the measurements taken on site.

Will a custom unit match other furniture I already have?

That is the point of choosing timber and finish after we have seen the room. We can work to an existing dining table, buffet or desk, or to a paint colour already on the walls and joinery. Bring a sample, a photo, or the piece itself if it is small enough. We also work with interior designers when the wall unit is part of a wider scheme.

What should I bring to the Erina showroom?

Useful, not mandatory:

  • Width, depth and height of the space, measured twice
  • Doorway and hallway widths on the delivery route
  • Photos of the wall, including corners and windows
  • A note on what the unit has to hold — TV, books, glassware, files, monitors
  • A finish direction if you have one: natural timber, white wash, or paint

If you only have a floor plan, bring that too. Plans often miss skirting, door swing and the real delivery path. Those get checked in the showroom or on site.

Who do you build for, and how far do you travel?

Coastal Design Furniture has been Australian owned and making timber furniture from Erina since 1995. The family background in custom timber work goes back further. We serve the Central Coast and work with clients from North Sydney through to the Hunter. The showroom is open Monday to Saturday 9am–5pm and Sunday 10am–4pm.

TV Units FAQ

Coastal Design Furniture designs and builds custom TV units from our Erina showroom on the NSW Central Coast. A large part of the range is hand crafted in Australia with Australian and imported timbers. You choose length, height, drawers, a stand or a wall-hung bay, storage for digital equipment, and a natural timber, white wash or painted finish.

This FAQ answers the questions we hear most about TV units and TV wall units. It uses the same details as our TV Units page, the Coastal TV Unit and Coastal White Wall Unit product notes, the Wall Units FAQ, and the Erina measuring and home-office guides.

What is a TV unit, and how is it different from a TV wall unit?

A TV unit is the timber piece the screen sits on or in front of — usually a low run of drawers and cupboards under the television, with space for a soundbar, decoder or games console. A TV wall unit is the larger build: storage beside and often above the screen as well as under it. On the Central Coast we regularly combine the two so the living-room wall reads as one run, not a separate cabinet parked under a floating TV.

Do you sell ready-made entertainment sets?

No. We do not sell boxed matching entertainment sets. Floor pieces in the Erina showroom are starting points. If you like the Coastal TV Unit (white or natural), the Tassie Oak TV Unit, the Custom Tas Oak/White TV Unit, the CR TV Unit, or a full TV wall unit such as the Elegant White or the large natural timber wall-hung example, we can build that idea longer, taller, slimmer, with a different drawer layout, or as a wall unit around a hanging screen.

What can you customise on a TV unit?

Almost the layout. Common changes include:

  • Length, height and depth to suit the wall, the screen size and the walkway in front
  • A stand-style unit the TV sits on, or an open bay for a wall-hung screen
  • Cupboards under the TV for digital equipment
  • More or fewer drawers, shelves or doors
  • Glass shelves, glass doors and internal lighting
  • Extra length so the unit also works as display storage either side of the screen
  • A full TV wall unit that ties into the rest of the wall

The Elegant White TV Wall Unit on our site is a typical custom brief: shelving for extra equipment, glass shelves, enclosed glass doors and lighting. The large natural timber example was built around a wall-hung TV with storage underneath. Bring a photo if you have one. We design from the wall and from what has to live in the unit, not from a catalogue SKU.

Can you build around a wall-hung television?

Yes. That is a common job. We measure the screen (or the planned screen size), the wall plate position, power and antenna points, then build the unit around that feature. Storage can sit under the TV for equipment and run up either side with open or glass shelves. The screen stays the centre of the wall; the timber does the rest.

Where does the decoder, soundbar and games console go?

Under the TV, in enclosed cupboards, or on open shelves if you want easy access. Clients often ask for extra depth, cable cut-outs and ventilated enclosed storage so boxes do not overheat and leads are not hanging off the back. Glass doors and lighting are useful if you still want to see the equipment without leaving it on show. Tell us what you own now and what you might add later — the unit should still work when the next box arrives.

How wide should the TV unit be?

Wider than the screen, in most rooms. A unit that is only as wide as the television looks unfinished once speakers, a soundbar or a plant sit beside it. Measure the wall, the screen (or the size you intend to buy), and how much space you need either side for walkways, windows and power. We confirm those figures on a free measure and quote so the finished length suits the wall, not a photo of someone else’s lounge.

Which timbers and finishes can I choose?

Timber options used across the custom range include Jarrah, Blackwood, Tassie Oak, Rosewood, Beechwood, Blackbutt, Pine, American Oak and Spot Gum. Other local and imported species such as Victorian Ash and Oregon are also used depending on the piece.

Finishes are a natural timber finish, white wash, stain, or paint in a colour that already sits in the house. The Coastal TV Unit is often seen in white; the Tassie Oak TV Unit in a natural hardwood. Either can be built the other way, or painted to match existing joinery.

Can a TV unit be part of a larger wall unit?

Yes. Integrating a TV unit with custom wall storage is one of the most useful living-room builds we do. One timber run can hold the screen, hide the equipment, and give you display or closed storage on the same wall. That is cleaner than a low TV cabinet plus a separate bookcase. If the same room also needs a buffet look or extra display, we plan the whole wall rather than adding pieces later.

How do I know what size to order?

Measure the wall twice, in millimetres: width, height, and how deep the unit can sit without blocking a walkway or door swing. Note the television size (or the size you plan to buy), whether it will hang or stand, and where the power, antenna and any wall plate already sit. Also measure doorway, hallway and stair widths on the delivery path — solid timber units do not flex around a tight corner. Photos of the full wall, including corners and windows, help more than a floor plan on its own.

You do not have to get every figure perfect before you visit. Rough notes are enough. A showroom conversation or a free on-site measure confirms the numbers before anything is made.

What if the wall is an alcove, a corner, or has a raked ceiling?

That is a common reason people come to us instead of buying a standard cabinet. Length, height, shelf layout and which side storage sits on can all change to suit the wall. Off-the-shelf TV units are often too short for a wide Central Coast living room, or too deep for an alcove. A custom run can fill the wall and still leave the screen at the right height.

How long does a custom TV unit take, and do you install it?

Lead time depends on timber, finish and how full the workshop is. We confirm timing with the quote. Larger TV wall units are planned around the delivery path as well as the finished wall. Installation can be arranged so the piece is set level, fixed where it needs to be, and checked against the measurements taken on site — including the wall-hung TV position if that is part of the brief.

Will a custom TV unit match other furniture I already have?

That is the point of choosing timber and finish after we have seen the room. We can work to an existing coffee table, buffet, wall unit or paint colour already on the walls and joinery. Bring a sample, a photo, or the piece itself if it is small enough. We also work with interior designers when the TV wall is part of a wider scheme.

What should I bring to the Erina showroom?

Useful, not mandatory:

  • Width, depth and height of the wall, measured twice
  • Screen size, and whether the TV will hang or stand
  • Doorway and hallway widths on the delivery route
  • Photos of the wall, including corners, windows and power points
  • A note on what has to live in the unit — decoder, soundbar, console, discs, speakers

If you only have a floor plan, bring that too. Plans often miss skirting, door swing, the TV wall plate and the real delivery path. Those get checked in the showroom or on site.

Buffet and Hutches FAQ

Coastal Design Furniture designs and builds custom buffets and hutches from our Erina showroom on the NSW Central Coast. Many pieces are hand crafted in Australia with Australian and imported timbers. You choose length, height, drawers, doors, a hutch on top if you need one, and a natural timber, whitewash or painted finish.

This FAQ answers the questions we hear most about buffets and hutches. It uses the same details as our Buffet and Hutches page, the dining and measuring guides, and the Wall Units and TV Units FAQs.

What is a buffet, and how is it different from a hutch?

A buffet is the low timber cabinet that usually sits against the dining-room wall — drawers and cupboards for serving ware, table linen and the pieces you do not want on the table. A hutch is the upper section: open or glass shelves (sometimes with lighting) that sit on or above the buffet so plates, glassware and objects can be seen. You can order the buffet on its own, or a buffet and hutch as one run. On the Central Coast we often match the timber to an existing dining table rather than selling a boxed suite.

Do you sell ready-made dining sets with a matching buffet?

No. We do not sell boxed matching dining sets. Floor pieces in the Erina showroom are starting points. If you like the Blackbutt Buffet, Blackwood Buffet, Coastal Buffet, Tas Oak White Base Buffet, Boston Buffet or Cabinet, Newland Buffet, Terrigal Buffet, Tas Oak/Whitewash Buffet, Tasmanian Oak Buffet, or the Tassie Oak Buffet and Hutch, we can build that idea longer, taller, slimmer, with extra drawers or shelves, or with a hutch added or left off.

What can you customise on a buffet or hutch?

Almost the layout. Common changes include:

  • Length, height and depth to suit the wall, the table and the walkway behind chairs
  • More or fewer drawers, doors or shelves
  • A hutch added to a buffet, or a buffet built without one
  • Glass shelves, glass doors and internal lighting in the hutch
  • A mixed finish — for example a white base with a natural timber top
  • Corner or alcove builds, including a slimmer depth for a tight dining room

Bring a photo if you have one. We design from the wall and from what has to live in the cabinet — serving platters, glassware, linen — not from a catalogue SKU.

Do I need a hutch, or is a buffet enough?

A buffet on its own is enough if you mainly need closed storage and a serving surface. Add a hutch if you want to display plates and glassware, or if the wall above the buffet looks unfinished. A hutch also keeps everyday pieces off the table without hiding them. If you are unsure, we can design the buffet so a hutch can be added later, or quote both options after we have seen the room.

Will a buffet match my dining table?

That is one of the main reasons people come to us. We can work to an existing table — Tassie oak, blackbutt, blackwood, painted white, whitewash — or build table and buffet together so the timber and finish read as one room. Bring a sample, a photo, or a chair if it travels easily. We also work with interior designers when the dining wall is part of a wider scheme.

The range page itself includes Blackbutt, Blackwood, Tassie Oak and Tasmanian Oak buffets, plus white-base and whitewash versions.

Finishes are a natural timber finish, whitewash, stain, or paint in a colour that already sits in the house. A Tas Oak White Base Buffet is a typical mixed finish: timber top, painted base.

How long and how deep should a buffet be?

Long enough to be useful as a serving surface, short enough that chairs and a walkway still work. Depth matters as much as length: too deep and the dining chairs cannot pull back; too shallow and platters and drawers fight each other. Measure the wall twice, in millimetres, and measure the gap behind the table when chairs are pulled out. We confirm those figures on a free measure and quote so the finished piece suits the room, not a photo of someone else’s dining room.

How do I know what size to order?

Measure the wall twice: width, height to the ceiling or picture rail, and how deep the buffet can sit. Note windows, power points, air-conditioning units and skirting. Also measure doorway, hallway and stair widths on the delivery path — solid timber buffets and hutches do not flex around a tight corner. Photos of the full wall, including corners, help more than a floor plan on its own.

You do not have to get every figure perfect before you visit. Rough notes are enough. A showroom conversation or a free on-site measure confirms the numbers before anything is made.

Do you offer a free measure and quote?

Yes. A consultant can come to the home, measure the wall, ceiling and delivery path, mark skirting, windows, power and door swings, and talk through how the dining room is used. The visit is so production starts from the room, not from a photo of someone else’s house. Book through the Measure and Quote page, call (02) 4365 6298, or come into 166 Central Coast Highway, Erina.

What if the wall is an alcove, a corner, or shorter than a standard buffet?

That is a common reason people come to us instead of buying a standard cabinet. Length, height, shelf layout and whether a hutch sits on top can all change to suit the wall. Off-the-shelf buffets are often too long for a Central Coast dining alcove, or too deep once the table and chairs are in place. A custom run can fill the wall and still leave a clear path around the table.

How long does a custom buffet or hutch take, and do you install it?

Lead time depends on timber, finish and how full the workshop is. We confirm timing with the quote. Taller buffet-and-hutch pieces are planned around the delivery path as well as the finished wall. Installation can be arranged so the piece is set level, the hutch is fixed where it needs to be, and the build is checked against the measurements taken on site.

What should I bring to the Erina showroom?

Useful, not mandatory:

  • Width, depth and height of the wall, measured twice
  • Doorway and hallway widths on the delivery route
  • Photos of the wall, including corners and windows
  • A note on what the buffet has to hold — platters, glassware, linen, serving pieces
  • A photo or sample of the dining table if you want the timber to match
  • A finish direction if you have one: natural timber, whitewash, or paint

If you only have a floor plan, bring that too. Plans often miss skirting, door swing and the real delivery path. Those get checked in the showroom or on site.
