Most home offices fail for a simple reason. The desk is chosen for how it looks in a photo, not for whether a laptop, paper stack, printer and guest chair can sit there at the same time.
Coastal Design Furniture builds custom timber office furniture at our Erina showroom on the NSW Central Coast. We do not sell a boxed “executive set.” We make the pieces that belong together in your room: a desk to the right width and depth, filing where you actually reach for it, and a desk wall unit or hutch if the wall can take it.
That is the difference between a spare bedroom that feels like a temporary workstation and a home office that still works in two years.
What an executive home office actually needs
An executive look is less about a matching five-piece suite and more about one calm, complete wall of work.
In most Central Coast homes that means:
- A desk with enough depth for a monitor (or two) and still room to write
- Closed storage for files and the printer, so the top stays clear
- Open or glass shelving if you want books and a tidy video-call background
- A guest chair only if the room has a second clear spot — the chair itself is separate from the timber build
From our office range that usually translates to a Tassie oak or painted desk (including corner desks), a filing cabinet or extra drawer, and a white or timber desk wall unit. Any of those can be widened, shortened, or built as a full wall with a worktop and hutch.
Prepare the room before you choose timber
Skip the floor-plan sketch as your only guide. Measure the space the furniture has to live in and the path it has to travel.
Bring this list to a consultation:
- Room length, width and ceiling height
- Doorway, hallway and stair widths (solid timber desks do not flex around a tight corner)
- Window and power-point positions
- Everything that lives on or under the desk every day — monitors, laptop stand, paper trays, printer, scanner, files
- Whether a second person ever sits opposite you
- A finish direction: natural hardwood, white wash, or a painted colour that already exists in the house
If the office is a spare bedroom in Erina, Terrigal, Gosford or Wamberal, also note built-in robes you want to keep. A custom corner desk or slimmer run often works around them better than a large rectangular “executive” top.
Do you need to visit the showroom?
It helps. Grain, joinery and white-wash samples are easier to judge in person at 166 Central Coast Highway, Erina. If you cannot get there first, we can still come to the home or workplace for a free measure and quote.
How a custom office build works
The sequence is the same whether you want a slimline desk or a wall of storage.
- Choose the timber base. Most office pieces are hand crafted in Australia using hardwood. That decision sets strength, grain and how the suite will age in a coastal climate.
- Choose the finish. Natural timber, white wash, or paint matched to your walls or joinery.
- Set the scope. One desk; desk plus filing; or a built-in wall with worktop, shelves and hutch.
- Adjust the pieces. A corner computer desk can change which side the return sits on, plus width, height and depth. Extra drawers or a hutch can be added instead of buying a second standalone unit later.
- Check the layout against real use. Walk the path from the door to the chair. Confirm the printer door can open. Confirm a guest can sit down without moving the filing cabinet.
Existing designs can be modified. You do not have to start from a blank sheet if a Tassie oak corner desk or white desk wall unit is already close.

Three layouts that work in Central Coast homes
1. Compact spare-room office
Corner desk, shallow return, one filing drawer or small cabinet. Best when the room still needs a bed or robe. Keep desk depth honest: dual monitors need more than a hallway console.
2. Desk plus matching storage
Freestanding desk with a matching filing cabinet or credenza behind or beside it. Good when you want the option to rearrange later. Keep finishes identical so it reads as one suite, not two unrelated buys.
3. Full desk wall unit
Worktop, overhead hutches and closed cupboards built to the wall. This is the closest thing we make to a traditional executive backdrop, and it is the strongest option for video calls. It also uses awkward alcoves that a standard desk wastes.
We can talk through which of those three fits your room in the showroom or on site.
Mistakes that show up after installation
- Locking dimensions from an online product photo before anyone measures doorways
- Choosing a stock imported finish that will not match the dining table or wall unit already in the house
- Leaving printer and cable storage until the desk is finished — then living with cords across the top
- Pushing a large desk against the only window and blocking light
- Buying “the set” first and discovering the guest chair has nowhere to go
A free measure removes the first problem. Custom sizing and finish options remove the second.
Materials and finish
Office pieces are built as furniture, not flat-pack carcasses. Australian hardwood is the usual base. Finishes stay consistent across desk, filing and wall unit so the room reads as one design.
If the office sits near the coast, say so at the quote stage. Humidity and sun through a west-facing window affect how you specify finish and where you place a solid timber top.
FAQ
Can you modify a desk that is already on the website?
Yes. Width, height, shelf side, extra drawers, a hutch and timber species can all change to suit the room.
Do you supply executive office chairs?
Our office range is timber desks, filing and desk wall units. Bring your own task chair, or we can discuss seating separately if you need timber guest chairs from the wider range.
How long does a custom office take?
Time depends on scope and finish. The measure-and-quote visit is the point where we can give a realistic production window for your pieces.
Do you only work in Erina?
The showroom is in Erina. We regularly plan home offices across the Central Coast and can discuss further afield when the project suits a custom timber build.
Next step
If you are planning a home office, or replacing a desk that never quite fitted, start with the room, not the catalogue.
